The U.S. Transplant Games is the nation's premier athletic competition for recipients of life-saveing transplants. Patterned on the Olympic Games, the Games are presented by the National Kidney Foundation every two years.

Congratulations To Our 2006 Transplant Games Winners

After racking up countless hours of hard work and preparation, thirteen athletes from Team Upstate New York traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for a week of friendly athletic competition at the National Kidney Foundation’s 2006 U.S. Transplant Games.

Team Upstate NY earned a total of 10 Medals - 5 Bronze and 5 Silver! 

Karen Gledhill, a kidney transplant recipient won a silver for swimming the 50 meter Breaststroke and a second silver for the 50 meter Backstroke.

Tom Jansen, a liver transplant recipient from
Horseheads NY, won the Bronze in his age group for the 5K Race for Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness.  He also earned Silver in the 1500 meter Run.

Kevin McCorry, a 15-year old Bone Marrow recipient from Gates, won a Bronze medal for his gross score in individual Golf in his age group, a Silver for cycling in the 5K road race and a Silver for cycling in the 20K road race.

Mike Swete, a liver transplant recipient, earned a Bronze medal in Individual Golf (net score) in his age group.

Ryan Yaple, a kidney recipient from Gates, won a Bronze for the High Jump and a Bronze for the 200 meter run.

 

 

What are the U.S. Transplant Games?

The U.S. Transplant Games is the nation's premier athletic competition for recipients of life-saving transplants. Patterned on the Olympic Games, the Games are presented by the National Kidney Foundation and sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Who can compete?

Any child or adult who is the recipient of a life-saving organ transplant, including heart, kidney, lung, liver, pancreas, and/or bone marrow. Participating athletes will demonstrate how they have returned to full, healthy lives after transplantation. You do not need to be an outstanding athlete! Participants of all skill levels are invited to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in one or more of 12 sports, including cycling, bowling, golf, racquetball, swimming, tennis and track and field events.

How do I register to compete?

The National Kidney Foundation of Upstate New York is currently seeking transplant athletes – including kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas and bone marrow - to be part of Team Upstate New York.
